We've been getting a lot of requests to install deadbolts - so we thought it would be useful for you "Do-it-yourself" enthusiasts, enjoy.

What is a Deadbolt ?

A deadbolt is a special kind of locking mechanism. They are more secure than ordinary key-operated locks because the weight of the locking bar is usually sufficient to increase break-in time to 10 or 15 minutes.

Unlike a spring-bolt (in which the bolt is held in place only by the pressure of a spring, and can easily be retracted), a deadbolt lock cannot be opened except by rotating the lock cylinder. (Note that some spring-bolt mechanisms incorporate anti-retraction devices that prevent the bolt from being pressed in when the door is closed.) Stories go that with a magnet, it is possible to open a non-secure deadbolt from the other side.

A variant of the standard deadbolt is the vertical deadbolt, which generally rests on top of a door. Vertical deadbolts resist jimmying (in which an intruder inserts a pry bar between the door and the frame and tries to pry the bolt out of the jamb).

Adding a deadbolt for security can be made a little easier by using a rim-mounted lock. With a rim deadbolt, you only have to drill one hole in the door for the lock tumbler cylinder.

Steps:
1. Lay out, mark and drill the size of hole specified for the lock cylinder hole in the door.

2. Attach the lock cylinder and mounting ring to the outside face of the door.

3. Mount the lock body to the inside face of the door. The previous two steps are sometimes accomplished at the same time because some brands tie the two pieces together by the mounting screws.

4. Use the position of the lock mechanism to determine the mounting position of the catch - the part of the lock that the bolt seats into. Attach the catch by sinking screws through the door trim and into the actual stud framing to insure better security.

Tips:

A deadbolt lock is only as secure as the door and frame work that it is mounted on. An expensive lock won't do much good on a cheap, flimsy door.
